The refugee camps |
The "Kukes One" and "Kukes Two" camps are just a drop in the ocean when compared to the needs of the by now over one hundred thousand refugees present in the area, but still better than nothing. Most important, the two camps set up by the Alpine regiments are one of the symbols of the resistance of Humanity in the face of the horror, cruelty and evil which seem to want to push us back into a mediaeval darkness of violence. "Kukes Two" suffers from the emergency situation in which it was set up, and from the limited means at disposal for fitting it out. The furious downpours from the Albanian mountains transform the ground into a sea of mud, and refugees and volunteers wade with difficulty among the sodden tents. The will to live, and to help live, nevertheless remains stronger than any adversity, on both sides. | |||
