Electrical appliances represent yet another important entry on the list of household
consumption of electricity. The lion's share essentially goes to refrigerators and
washing-machines, without forgetting however freezers and dishwashers, but also televisions,
video-recorders, stereo units and computers which all cut into consumption, though
not always noticeably for the consumer.
Thus as far as electrical appliances are concerned, a series of simple notions can
help contain consumption and, consequently, expense. Let us take the refrigerator,
for instance: avoid introducing hot foods and avoid leaving it open for longer than
necessary.
Wash laundry at 90°C only when called for. Wash the dishes by hand as much as
possible, using the dishwasher only for large quantities of dishes. In addition to
these notions, the choice of the electrical home appliance to buy is also very important.
Indeed, the market offers appliances which lead to considerable savings in energy
consumption, do not use gases harmful for the ozone layer and employ less water.
In general, their cost is equal to or slightly higher than that of other electrical
appliances.
At the time of purchase, it is necessary to request information on consumption and
performance and then compare them with those of other appliances. As far as televisions,
computers and stereo units are concerned, avoid keeping them on stand-by and instead
turn them off all together.
Indeed, in the stand-by mode, they can consume as much as 20% of the energy required
for their functioning. For this reason and to avoid absorption by power units, installing
a switch can be useful.
