Some five billion years ago a magnificent living being of light and energy was conceived and born from within the magical dark womb of space. This brilliant being, our Grandmother and Grandfather Sun, is the brightest star we can see from our Mother Planet, and was the first born within our solar system. All subsequent life, including humans, within our Solar System has been conceived and born from our Grandmother and Grandfather Sun.
Our Sun is one million times the size of our Earth. The Sun is so large that matter created in the center can take from one to fifty million years to reach the outer surface. It is difficult to imagine a star, of such magnitude.

Every day our Grandmother and Grandfather Sun sends us light through 148 million kilometers of space. This dance of light and energy on our Earth enables all plants, animals, and humans to live, and gives us the ability to see all the wondrous and challenging forms of Life.
In our modern time with the conveniences that electricity provides us, it is too easy to forget how significant our Grandmother and Grandfather Sun are to our very existence. In past centuries people were more aware of our intimate and essential relationship with the Sun. People awoke with the light of the morning and slept with the darkness of night, in rhythm with the natural cycles of our Earth. Many people also experienced the direct relationship of the sun and the garden. Now so often we walk into a store and buy our food without giving thought to the sunlight that makes the growth and existence of the plants and animals possible.
Our Sun gives to us in so many ways, our lives are inseparable from the gifts of light and energy. As the ancients did in the past, we need to, in our time honor and respect our vital and precious relationship with Grandmother and Grandfather Sun.
